Hagerman Fossil Beds

Hagerman is home to over two hundred different species of fossil plants and animals. The list includes Sabertooth Cat, a Hyena-like dog, Peccary, Mastodon, Otter, Bear, Shrew, Camel, and Ground Sloth, as well as many other species. With over 3,000 new fossil fragments found each year, it is one of the most fossiliferous Pliocene-aged sites in the world.

The monument also includes a portion of the Oregon Trail. Information related to the entire Oregon Trail as well as the Idaho portion is available in the Visitor Center.

Balanced Rock

Over 48 feet tall and 40 tons, the wind-carved rock balances precariously on a pedestal only 3 feet by 17 inches. The trailhead for Balanced Rock is located just west of the Balanced Rock Park. The parking lot is only a few hundred feet away from the rock. It is a quick, but fairly steep climb to get to the top. There is little shade near Balanced Rock, but sunrise and sunset are stunning. It is also a great place for dark sky photographers.

The nearby Balanced Rock Park is an excellent spot for a picnic or camping. The beautiful Salmon Falls Creek and Canyon are an oasis in the desert.

Waterfalls

Shoshone Falls is a natural wonder on the Snake River that rises 212 feet, higher than Niagara Falls. It’s best observed in the spring when the water flows are high. Shoshone Falls hosts playgrounds, hiking trails, landscaped picnic areas, a boat ramp, a swimming area and a scenic overlook.

Thousands Springs produces awesome water displays where springs bubble up from deep within the river bed to form a crystal blue water pool. The water that explodes from the rock canyon walls and rushes to the Snake River is thought to be surges of the Big Lost River.

More waterfalls strut their stuff at Bridal Veil Falls, Pillar Falls, Twin Falls and the Perrine Coulee Falls.

The Perrine Bridge

For a fantastic view, walk across this bridge 1,500 feet across the Snake River to look down 50 stories at a panoramic sight of the Snake River and the Centennial Waterfront Park.

See Evel Knievel’s famous Snake River motorcycle jump site. Watch the base jumpers plunge off the bridge, or book a jump yourself!
